Hwy 4 is closed in winter, just west of Lake Alpine. There are two Sno-Parks here, which serve a variety of backcountry users but have no facilities... and there is the Bear Valley Resort also. Locally, you can get Sno-Park permits at Ebbetts Pass Sporting Goods in Arnold (waypoint ARNOLD, 209-795-1686).

The Spicer Sno-Park (waypoint SPCRTH) is mostly for sledding and snowshoeing, with lots of families and big trees. It's half a mile to the Hell's Kitchen Overlook.

The Lake Alpine Sno-Park (waypoint ALPNTH) has a large snow-mobile concession, and is located where Hwy 4 is gated in winter. There is no trailhead sign and no sign of the lake from the trailhead!
