Bairs Creek and George Creek - cross-country trailheads for Mt. Williamson
Hwy 395 Waypoints - Eastern Sierra Trailheads and Junctions
Tuttle Creek - southeastern approach to Lone Pine Peak
GENERAL NOTES:
WARNING: Bears are very active at Whitney Portal, and will break into cars just to see if food might be there - even if no food is there.
Take the Whitney Portal Road west from the center of Lone Pine (waypoint LONPIN). About 3 miles later continue straight (west) past Horseshoe Meadows Road (waypoint HORSEJ), and follow the pavement all the way to Whitney Portal (the big tourist destination). (NOTE: The GRANIT and OLIVAS waypoints below are trailheads for Tuttle Creek.)
The trail over Trail Crest starts from road's end (waypoint PORTAL), and later splits into the Mountaineer's Route (North Fork of Lone Pine Creek) and the easier walking trail (past Mirror Lake).
The trail up to Meysan Lake (for peaks like LeConte) starts in a campground just downhill from the portal (waypoint MEYSAN) and follows Meysan Creek in an entirely separate drainage south of the Whitney trail.
