south Onion Valley - Kearsarge Pass, Golden Trout Lake

GENERAL NOTES:

Baxter Pass is short and steep, crossing the crest between Mt Baxter and Diamond Peak and descending to the northern end of Sixty Lakes Basin. It also provides access to Black Mtn and Mt Mary Austin.

Here's a overview of the road from Hwy 395 to the trailhead, details are below:

Start by getting yourself to US-395 and Fish Hatchery Road (waypoint FISHRD). This intersection is about 2 miles north of Independence (waypoint INDEPN). (For reference, FISHRD is 24 miles south of Big Pine (waypoint BIGPIN) and 22 miles north of Lone Pine (waypoint LONPIN) on the east side of the Sierra Nevada.)

Turn west on Fish Hatchery Road (waypoint FISHRD) from Hwy 395 (about two and a quarter miles north of the traffic light in Independence). Take the northern fork of Oak Creek Road by bearing right at waypoint NFOAK1, just after the fish hatchery, where there should be a brown sign marked 'Baxter Pass'.

Continue about 4.5 miles (going past Oak Creek Campground, waypoint OAKCMP) through some switchbacks to the Baxter Pass trailhead (waypoint BAXPTH) at 6000 feet elevation.
